Boiler Scrappage Scheme FAQ

Does my boiler qualify?
The scheme applies to all boilers that have a G efficiency rating. If your boiler is cast iron with a simple ignition system and an open flue or if it has a permanent light then there's a good chance it's rated G. You must live in England. The scheme is not yet approved for Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

How do I know if my boiler is rated G?
For a full list, see www.ukboilerscrappagescheme.org.uk/node/6. Cast iron boilers, back boilers, boilers with permanent pilot lights are probably rated G efficiency. A G-rated boiler is one that has a "seasonal efficiency of less than 70%".

When will the scheme start?
Vouchers can be applied for from 18th January 2010.

How much is the scheme worth?
The government believe that replacing your boiler from Band G to Band A will save you approximately £230 per year. A typical boiler will cost £500 to £1000 and labour to install it a similar amount again. Worst case scenario would be £2,000 which would pay back within 9 years. And you'll feel good about saving the estimated 1 tonne of CO2 per year. New efficient boilers can also add value to your property. Remember, the government will contribute £400 towards the cost of replacing your boiler.

Who can I use to replace my boiler?
Always use a qualified plumber for the installation of new boilers. They should be gas-safe registered.

How do I register for the boiler scrappage scheme?
First of all, confirm that your home has a G-rated (or equivalent) boiler. You will need to provide the following information:

1. Your full name.
2. The address of the property you wish to claim the voucher for.
3. The make and name of the boiler being scrapped.
4. The name / company name and address of the installer carrying out the work.
5. Gas Safe/OFTEC/HETAS or MCS registration number of installer.
6. Confirmation that you have received a quote from the installer to carry out the work.

When will the vouchers be issued – and how is payment made?
The £400 vouchers will be issued from 18th January 2010. You will receive the voucher approximately ten days after application. Vouchers are valid for 12 weeks from date of issue. If the voucher is not redeemed within this time, it will be cancelled and reallocated. There will only be one voucher per household, but if the voucher expires, it will be possible to apply for another if available.

Which boilers and boiler manufacturers can the vouchers be redeemed against?
Vouchers can be redeemed against any A-rated gas, oil or LPG boiler, boilers with a Passive Flue Heat Recovery Device, Micro CHP units or Microgeneration Certification Scheme-registered biomass boilers and heat pumps. Solar Thermal is also eligible if combined with an eligible boiler replacement. Electric boilers are not eligible.
