There has been a long-running campaign to pressurise the government to introduce this boiler scrapping initiative and those campaigners are hailing the December announcement as a fantastic success.
One of the main groups behind the move is www.reheatbritain.org.uk who have cited 5 reasons for the change:

2. Less carbon dioxide
3. Support for jobs and small businesses
4. A boost to UK manufacturing
5. Guaranteed environmental benefits
The government has also been inspired by the success of its car scrappage scheme which was intended to boost the UK car market. It was hugely successful though had its critics. In contrast to the car scrappage scheme, where consumers could use the subsidy to buy a gas guzzler, the boiler scrappage scheme requires consumers to change highly inefficient boilers with much more A-rated versions.
